This
video message by then US President Ronald Reagan was presented
to the Japan Productivity Center for Socio-Economic Development
(JPC-SED) in 1985 on the occasion of the 30th anniversary
of the productivity movement launched by the JPC.
It is highly unusual for an incumbent US president to present
such a message as this, and indicates the high level of interest
of the US in Japans productivity movement.
The JPC-SED takes great pride in this message. Its substance
still holds true today.

Chairman
Goshi, distinguished guests; Japan and the United States
are bound together by our warm friendship, our shared
belief in democracy and our common interest in vigorous
and far-reaching economic growth. As those of you associated
with the Japan Productivity Center know, we share in
particular a firm resolve to meet the challenge of greater
productivity. Only through gains in productivity, we
both understand, can we make come true our dreams of
higher standards of living in Japan, in the United States,
and around the world. For three decades now the Japan
Productivity Center has helped us to meet this challenge.
The Center has worked hard to promote good relations
between management and labour: it has placed a strong
emphasis on incentives for savings, investment and innovation.
Indeed, the Center has pioneered in technological innovation
and served as a high productivity model, for thousands
of enterprises in Japan and neighbouring nations. Many
figures from Japanese industry, labour and academia
have advanced the work of the Japan Productivity Center;
and in so doing they have contributed to more prosperous,
fuller lives for millions. On this proud occasion, the
thirtieth anniversary of the Japan Productivity Center,
I want to thank all of you who have helped to make the
Center such a success. You have my heart-felt wishes
for continued success in the years ahead.
Thank you. |
