The Regional Tourism Management Forum (Principal Members: Mr. Wataru Aso, Governor of Fukuoka Prefecture, Mr. Hiroshi Suda, Advisor of Central Japan Railway Co., Mr. Shinji Fukukawa, Chairman of Machine Industry Memorial Foundation, Mr. Teruhiko Mochizuki, Professor of Tama University) of JPC announced the result of the survey of on regional tourism and business promotion. The Forum was established to promote local areas mainly through tourism and cooperation between private sector and local governments. This survey was conducted in December of 2009 against 834 local governments. 355 governments replied the survey. (Response rate of 42.6%.) The summary of the survey is as follows.
- Financial situation of tourism related businesses (hotels, restaurants, retail, local transportation) were worsening. In hotel business, in particular, those who replied to have "extremely tough" situation increased by more than 10%.
- Of the issues precluding the promotion of tourist-oriented region, "establishment of brand of tourist-oriented region" was rated to be the most critical issue. "Agreeing on the cost-sharing and profit-sharing scheme" was also a critical issue.
- The capability that is most lacking in the local regions: "Capability to convert local resources into tourism attraction" was rated number one. "Capability to attract tourism industry" was rated lowest, possibly indicating lack of enthusiasm in inviting outside capital.
- Regarding policies necessary to increase tourists from China, more than 50% mentioned "increasing Chinese guidance" and "providing detailed information." There was little concern about "improving security to contain local residents' concern."
- Among the measures for leveling the demand of tourism, "introduction of autumn holidays" came as number one. "Promotion of work-life balance" was also considered as priority. "Review of school holidays" was rated low.
